Dr. Khan, an alumnus of KibriaLab, will be joining the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Alberta this fall as an Assistant Professor. His “Energy Transition Lab” will be focusing on developing novel materials, technologies, and credible transition pathways towards Net-Zero emissions. Dr. Khan has a PhD in Material Science and Engineering and has spent the last 8 years working across the value chain of hydrogen and clean technology development, spanning material synthesis and characterization, reactor design, pilot demonstrations and system level analysis. His career has materialized into 6 granted US patents, 1 book chapter and over 37
Congratulations to Shabab Saad for receiving 2022 GRInSTEM Award to scale up and commercialize the Carbon Fibre Project. This award will help in forming a spin-off company and compete for Phase III of Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge in 2023. Shabab Saad holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary, AB. During his undergraduate career, he gained extensive experience in sol-gel synthesis of large pore size silica glass for optical fiber production at the UNM Center for High Technology Materials under the supervision of
Shabab’s project ‘Process Development for Transforming Alberta’s Asphaltenes into High-value Carbon Fibers’ received the Phase II Award in Carbon Fiber Grand Challenge competition. Shariful successfully defended his Master’s thesis named “Towards Energy Efficient Carbon Dioxide Electrolysis for Sustainable Chemical Production” on December 17, 2021. Congratulations!
KibriaLab is named as one of the awardees in Alberta Innovate’s Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge. Alberta Innovates’ Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge is accelerating the development of pathways for large-scale production of carbon fibre and advanced manufacturing products from Alberta’s bitumen. Carbon fibre’s high strength, stiffness, and corrosion resistance coupled with its light weight make it better than many conventional metals and polymers used in transportation, infrastructure, construction and consumer products.
